Check out these awesome Karate drills video by Koryu Uchinadi below.
It's been more than a year since I last update this site, simply because my training has changed from Karate to MMA under the Crazy Monkey Defense Program by Rodney King and I do occasionally dabble in a bit of BJJ (Brazilian Jit Jitsu).
Then I stumbled into these cool Karate videos encompassing what I've learned from Kissaki Kai yet bearing a striking resemblance to my current MMA training regimen.
Here you go folks:
KANSETSU WAZA DRILLS (joint-locks & manipulation)
Similar to Koryu Uchinadi, Kissaki Kai Karate believed that functional training in Karate can be best achieved by 2 person drills.
The Kansetsu-waza drills above cover some common locks you can apply to restrain someone from harming you.
NAGE WAZA DRILLS (throwing or takedowns)
This video reminds me of what my coach Vince used to say:
The ground is the biggest fist so use it against your opponent.
Too bad my favorite throw, osoto gari is missing from this video. Check out my MMA Blog for a detail video on this throw.
SHIME WAZA DRILLS (chokes)
The favourite of the brethrens in my gym KDTA, chokes.
It's amazing that Koryu Uchinadi has tegumi drills for chokes, something I've never seen before in a "Karate-oriented" art.
NE WAZA DRILLS (grappling and submission)
What?!! I can almost hear the skeptics and disbelievers screaming through their monitors: Karate has grappling drills?
Well viewers, contrary to popular belief, Karate is not just a striking art.
If you look closely at all the Karate drills videos above, you'll notice how striking is use to setup some the locks, throws, chokes and submissions.
TEGUMI DRILL (two person functional training)
Ahhh...this really brings back memory. Two person Tegumi drill simulating strikes, defense, counters, grabs, escapes etc.
Basically conditioning themselves to react accordingly when threaten by common attacks. Similar to what I've done when I was practicing Kissaki Karate, the practitioners in this video are doing it in a much faster and harder way.
