Here you may download for free the best Karate kata videos for your reference. Use these videos to help you practice and to remember your kata; it's probably not a good idea to try to learn kata from these videos.

Please take note that these Karate Shotokan kata are performed in the typical JKA-style way, which is very popular but slightly different from what we practice. We do not train much on the physical presentation of kata like wide stances, wide or long arm & leg movements, snapping the gi, overly tensing or relaxing the muscles, kime and most of the typical competition style performance of kata.

We focus almost exclusively in the classical forms pre-dating 1900, which use kata to practice Karate techniques that are too dangerous to be practiced on a human being, including pressure points strikes. To practice kata effectively for fighting or self defense, we must know the Karate bunkai behind each kata beforehand. Only by knowing the meanings of each kata movements, we can comprehend the multitude of applications that they teach so that we acquire the skills to use it by practicing kata regularly.

Acquiring effective Karate skills for fighting is the ultimate objective we practice kata, nothing else. We do not practice kata for the sake of doing it, without understanding the reason or purpose for it. We will be nothing more than nicely choreograph dancers if we practice kata without knowing it's meanings or Karate bunkai.

The Tekki kata contain some of the most deadliest Karate techniques, which fearsome Okinawan fighter Master Choki Motobu used them with devastating effects in many street fights and challenge fights. Since we practice the classical pre-1900 forms, the Tekki kata are referred to as Naihanchi kata here.
